Le Franschhoek Hote and Spa - Eikendal Wine and Dine
We are so fortunate to live in Cape Town, South Africa. I live in a suburb that is 30 minutes from City Center, 30 Minutes from the beach and 30 minutes from some of the best wine farms and country suburbs in the world. One of my personal favourites is Franschhoek.
One Hotel however allows us to visit regularly with a monthly special Wine and Dine event and that is Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa. Every month it showcases a new wine farm from Cape Town. It's head chef designs a special menu (usually 5 to 7 courses) that goes perfectly with the wines on 'show'. They also have a great special that allows for a sleepover and includes breakfast the next morning - highly necessary due to all the wine being offered!
The rooms are great with a proper coffee machine in each room and all of them have beautiful views of the mountains that surrounds this beautiful hotel.
Now let's get to the food. This even was a showcasing of the Eikendal Wine Farm. With every showcasing it is the head honcho of the wine farm that comes to the Hotel to explain the idea behind the wine etc. [At this stage I must issue a word of warning: some of these guys take "head" to heart and do talk a bit much, but in that case ask them to fill up your glass again and just sit back and relax!)
Here was the menu - just look at it!
The really fancy set up - so many glasses, so much cutlery!
And here is the food:
The sesame seared tuna - what more do you need: seared tuna filled with sesame seeds and fresh figs! A surprising but very pleasant combination! We also really loved the Sauvignon Blanc, the best wine of the evening!
The goats cheese salad - I loved this and decided I could actually eat a big plate of this salad at any time. The creamy goats cheese went to well with the sweet roasted beetroot.
The Ballontine of Rabbit - all I could think was "poor Buggs Bunny" but despite that Hubby said he loved it. I was a bit consternated by the 'aged carrot' which looked like a plain ol' OLD carrot to me. Probably the chef trying something new.
The wrapped peppered Eland - this was sooo good and I am not fond of 'wild meat'. Something I would definitely eat again.
The shades of Orange - everything on the plate had an orange undertone without being too orange (if you know what I mean).
Just look at Hungry Hubby - you can't take him anywhere especially anywhere fancy!
The experience was great and something we do often. I really suggest you try it if you are ever in the region. Every experience is something new either trying new wines or new food. Maybe we'll see you there next time?
Enjoy!
